About the event
Welcome in Springtime by getting your creative juices flowing with this Spring Wreath making workshop. Experts from Jo Purdy's Hearts and Flowers Hidden Garden are coming along and providing all the material for us to make our very own Springtime Wreath.
Connecting with nature in this way is definelty not a new thing! Coming from the Old English word “writhian,” which means “twist,” wreaths are usually made by twisting greenery together and adorning with flowers, berries, and other decorative materials - and has a rich tapestry of meaning that dates back as far as the 7th Century BC.
Prevalent in the ancient traditions of the Greek, Roman and Persian empires wreaths were often worn as headresses to symbolised power, authority or were an award of honor to warriors, emperors and victorious athletes. They were made of a variety of materials including flowers, olive leaves, laurel, even fabric and jewels.
In ancient pagan, german and scandanavian cultures, wreaths have also symbolized nature and have been used to honour the return of the sun and the promise of spring. Symbolically evergreen represent the continuity of life and nature. The wreath is also said to represent the wheel of the year, in recognition of the fact that the darkness and cold of winter will eventually fade away ready for the light, growth and warmth of the Spring.
